Birmingham Children’s Centres spread happiness to families in need over Christmas

This Christmas Birmingham Children’s Centre services, delivered by Spurgeons under the Birmingham Forward Steps partnership were on a mission to ensure that no child went without, appealing for donations of toys and gifts to distribute to families in need across the four districts in which we work (Erdington, Hodge Hill, Perry Barr and Sutton Coldfield).

After making appeals the centres received donations of gifts and toys from a variety of businesses, with one of the biggest contributors being Jaguar Land Rover whose donations benefitted 400 children who had been identified by the centres as being the most in need of support this year.

In particular, the Birmingham Children’s Centre services were so overwhelmed with responses to their appeal that they were able to partner up with smaller local organisations who were in need of donations and pass on gifts so that vulnerable families in the community didn’t go without. Included among these was the Spring Housing charity in Birmingham which provides housing and support for those with no access to public funds and who are seeking refuge as well as victims fleeing domestic violence and abuse.

Another organisation identified by the teams was the Collingwood Autism Support Group who Spurgeons were able to distribute gifts to so that they could gift these to parents and children being supported through their service.

The teams at Birmingham also provided support over Christmas through emergency food bank parcels and putting on a series of virtual activities to families online including crafts and story times.

Spurgeons are particularly grateful for the community support we have received from the businesses and organisations across Birmingham who made this possible. We know that the impact we make to many young lives is only made possible because of the commitment of others who have supported us in our mission to ensure no child should face life’s struggles alone.
