Bereavement worksheet for children

Helping children with bereavement

Bereavement and grief can cause a tangle of feelings. For children and teenagers, it can prove especially hard to cope with and understand. It can be tricky to know how to support your child with what they're experiencing, and you may be going through your own grief, too.

That's where our bereavement worksheet for children comes in- it helps them process their feelings. It's suitable for children aged 8+, all the way up to 18.

All feelings are normal during grief

...but they can cause confusion. One day, your child might feel low, and the next they may feel happy and okay. All feelings are normal and they will likely evolve and change over time. It's important for your child to understand that what they're experiencing is typical for this difficult time.

Our bereavement worksheet will help them work through all of the thoughts and emotions that they are experiencing.

How to support your child with this worksheet

The best time to complete the bereavement worksheet is when they are feeling calm. Make sure that you are also are in the right headspace while you encourage them in this exercise.

Respect your child's feelings, even if they are different from your own. They may wish to complete the sheet themselves privately, and that's ok.

Grief isn't a mental health condition, and for months after the bereavement it's normal to have strong feelings. If the same intense feelings remain beyond 6 months or your child seems in distress more than usual you should contact your GP.

Remember that it's ok for you to show emotion about the bereavement in front of your child; it's part of being human. Normalise talking about the person who died and allowing feelings to be shown.
