Our faith basis
Inspired by the Christian faith, our mission is to provide support for children, young people and families who are experiencing difficulties or challenges so that they can have a better present and hopeful future.
Founded in faith
Spurgeons was born out of the Christian ministry of the great Baptist preacher and writer, Charles Haddon Spurgeon.
He was one of many prominent Christians in Victorian England who made a practical response to the Bible’s teaching to tackle poverty, challenge injustice and to live and love as a follower of Jesus Christ.
Founded in faith
Spurgeon and others founded the Stockwell Orphanage for “fatherless boys” in 1867, thanks to a large donation from an Anglican, Anne Hillyard and her insistence that he was the right person to carry out this mission. He was reluctant at first but after much soul searching and prayer, came to love this work and understand it as part of his Christian calling. We still bear our founder’s name and share his commitment to bring hope and change through our work.
Our work with children and families has developed over time but our vision and mission continues to be inspired and guided by faith. The charity's leadership team of Trustees, Chief Executive and Directors are Christians and our ethos, values and behaviours drive from our founding Christian faith.
Christianity
Spurgeons has Baptist roots and today works with people from different Christian denominations, people of other faiths and people with no faith.
What Christians believe is summed up in the Nicene Creed or the shorter Apostles Creed, both widely accepted traditional statements of the Christian Faith.
Churches, individuals and organisations of different Christian traditions seek to interpret and apply their beliefs, biblical teaching and personal faith to their situation, time and place. However, all share belief in one true, eternal God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
