OSFED

OSFED (other specified feeding or eating disorder) is a term used when a patient's symptoms don't fit exactly into one of the known eating disorders. This is very common as symptoms can be varied and individual. OFSED covers the biggest percentage of eating disorders.

What is OSFED?

The signs and symptoms of OSFED vary, but it's important to remember that even if someone's symptoms don't fall neatly into a diagnosis of anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating, their eating disorder can be equally as serious. OSFED sufferers need the same level of care as those diagnosed with one of the more well-known illnesses.

OSFED is a catch-all umbrella phrase for eating disorders that are slightly different- for example, 'atypical anorexia' is when someone with anorexia falls within the healthy weight range rather than underweight. However, someone with atypical anorexia will still need the same acute care.

Signs of OSFED

Signs and symptoms of OSFED can include:

  • Being uncomfortable eating around others
  • Being secretive about food
  • Lacking confidence/ self esteem
  • Low mood/ mood swings
  • Poor self-image
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling ashamed/ guilty
  • Feeling irritable
  • Fatigue.

It can be difficult to spot an eating disorder as they are illnesses of the mind. However, if you suspect there may be some signs that something is wrong, consult a GP as soon as possible.
