Spurgeons sponsors Conservative party prayer breakfast

CEO Ian Soars speaks at prayer breakfast

Spurgeons sponsored a prayer breakfast hosted by the Conservative Christian Fellowship, during the party conference in Birmingham on the 2nd October 2024.

Celebrating Spurgeons' vital work

Christians from the party and the local area came together to hear about and pray for the work of Spurgeons. Parenting Lead Nicola Baldwin gave a riveting insight into the sensory overload that some children experience and their struggle to cope, whilst Nii Anum, Boys2Men Project Lead, drew the audience into the world of boys and young men, who, fatherless, vulnerable and easily groomed, can slip into crime by association and face long custodial sentences.

Despite these discouraging situations, Spurgeons offers effective solutions. Nicola described the benefits of intervening early in a child's life and equipping both parents and teachers to make simple adjustments so that children can flourish. Nii explained that early intervention can prevent boys being drawn into crime, using skilled mentoring to explore masculinity, family and values.

The role of the church

Reflecting on Spurgeons' expertise and willingness to share resources and skills, CEO Ian Soars focused on the call to the church to step in to meet the high level of need amongst children and families across the country. He reported the local government commissioners are increasingly open to working with local churches.

Serving MP Danny Kruger and former MP Nick Fletcher were also on the panel and spoke compellingly about their work with young men in prisons. Danny's Only Connect charity equips prisoners to have better relationships, and Nick makes weekly visits to the men in Doncaster prison. Both politicians expressed their conviction that the church is an essential part of the solution and welcomed Spurgeon's vision, and they are ready to champion this.

After a short time for questions, attendees spent some time in prayer together. Our thanks to David Burrowes and Juliet Donoghue for organising an excellent prayer breakfast, and many thanks to Nicola and Nii for making sacrifices to come to Birmingham and showcase what Spurgeons is about.
