Get started with the finger breathing technique:

What is finger breathing?

The finger breathing technique, or five-finger breathing, is a quick and easy mindfulness exercise that can be used whenever your child is needing to calm down or relax.

By timing their breaths with the tracing of their fingers children can effectively regulate and slow down their breathing.

Simply hold out their hand with fingers outstretched as shown in the animation, and show them how to use a finger to trace up and down each finger on their outstretched hand as they breathe in and out.

This helps children to come back to the present moment, slow their breathing down and feel grounded.

Why the finger breathing technique?

The five-finger breathing method is a great place to start when trying to find a sense of calm and stillness.

Children can become easily dysregulated and overwhelmed, so having an exercise like this one can be a handy tool to help them feel better.

It can also help children who suffer from anxiety or are going through a hard time. Making this practice a daily event can help your child manage their emotions better in general.
