Erdington Family Hub Launch

Our new Family Hub has launched in Erdington!

Our new Erdington Family Hub is now open. Based in Lakeside and Castle Vale Children's Centres, we are offering support and helpful services to the community in Erdington, Birmingham.

The staff there will be able to assist parents and children aged 0-19 (or up to age 25 with SEND) with a number of services, including:

  • Parenting courses and groups
  • Childcare advice
  • Access to midwives and health visitors
  • Support for children with SEND, for example sensory rooms
  • Baby groups, messy play sessions and rhyme time
  • Links to Jobcentre Plus and training/education opportunities

What is a family hub?

Family hubs bring together services for families with children and young people from 0-19 years (25 with SEND). We offer a whole family approach to information, advice and support, where services wrap around families to offer help where it is needed.

'A family hub is community, it's arms around the families that come here,' says Sarah Smith, Head of Practice Development at Spurgeons.

'The focus is being one-stop shop, so that families can get the support they need in one place,' adds Sue Zubair, District Practice Manager.

‘My hope primarily is that when you walk in you are received with care and love. Secondly, whatever is going on in your life, that we can meet that need and meet that care,’

Ian Soars, Spurgeons CEO

What issues are families in Birmingham facing?

'We have got a lot of housing issues, a lot of people needing benefit welfare, and the domestic abuse rates for Erdington are quite high as well,' explains Kirsty Harper, Children's Service Manager. 'There's also poverty and parental mental health.'

The difference that a family hub makes

'Having a little one was challenging from the beginning,' says mum Naomi. 'I needed support and to speak to more mums and to learn more things. I was happy to hear from other mums and my daughter was able to mingle with other children. I'm glad I did reach out to Spurgeons.'

'Places like this can just bring communities together,' says Sarah at Safe Sleep Project, one of the partners in our hub. 'At the end of the day it takes a community to raise a child. I think that's something we need to instill into parent's minds- that you don't have to do it alone.'
