What is an Emotions Wheel?

Emotions can be complicated, and often for our children, it can be difficult to communicate how they're feeling. Using an emotions wheel like this one enables children to explore how they're feeling and visualise their emotions. This can help when it comes to discussing them effectively, and communicating their needs.

By adding a tool like this one to your conversations around feelings, your child will be able to better understand their emotions and identify and recognise how they feel.

This feelings wheel is printable and easy to use. Simply download our pdf, print in colour and attach the arrow using a split pin, and you are ready to begin identifying your emotions together.

How to use this wheel of emotions

Simply ask your child how they're feeling and ask them to use the wheel to point to their current emotion.

By embedding this into your daily lives, you can help your child understand the nature of changing feelings and understand that emotions shift throughout each day. What's more, by normalising all emotions, the feelings wheel can also reduce a child's anxiety and worries about feeling a particular way.

To get the most out of this tool, model how it would be used, providing an example of how you're feeling. This will enable your child to understand that experiencing a range of emotions throughout the day is natural. You can also discuss your chosen feeling with your child, so they understand that all emotions are valid, and it is okay to feel however they feel.

How does the feelings wheel make emotions more manageable?

A wheel of emotions tool like this one has a range of benefits and can be applied by children and families as part of a healthy routine. Here are some of the key benefits of using an emotions wheel regularly with your child:

  • Teaches children to respond appropriately to their emotions

  • Encourages patience, and enhanced understanding around what they’re feeling

  • Gives them the confidence to discuss how they’re feeling

  • Teaches acceptance around how we feel

  • Builds understanding of how emotions change throughout the day

  • Gives them strategies to deal with more difficult emotions and feelings.
