What is a gratitude journal?
With the busy nature of modern life, it can often be difficult for us to take some time to focus on our own mental health and wellbeing. Whether you are looking for a way to focus on the positive things around you or looking for ways to support a child with developing their outlook, this gratitude journal is the perfect place to start.
What's more, this positive habit is easy to fit in with a busy schedule as it requires a small amount of commitment. To start with, you only need to focus on smaller things. Why not try spending five or ten minutes in the evening when the children have been put to bed or making it a routine that you share with your child? This way you can both write down what you are grateful for, and share in the experience.
The process of focusing on what you have around you and noting down the things that make you feel grateful is a positive way to shift your mindset. The brain is there to protect us and keep us alive, which is why it often looks out for dangers. We have to practice seeing the small wins and things we are grateful for like a muscle. The more we practice, the easier it gets.
Benefits of practicing gratitude
By engaging in this habit of reflecting upon what we are grateful for can have many benefits:
-
Helps to nurture positive mental health and wellbeing
-
Reduces feelings of loneliness
-
Has the potential to make us happier
-
Helps with managing stress levels
-
Gives us a greater sense of self-worth
- Helps to stop catastrophising, as we begin to recognise that one inconvenience in the morning hasn't ruined the whole day, just maybe the morning.
