How can parents support their child when creating a safety plan?

It's important to teach them how they are able to keep themselves safe, before and during a crisis.

By working in collaboration with them, you can develop a greater understanding of what may be their potential triggers. It also enables them to be more prepared when these moments arise.

Why is it important to have a safety plan for children?

If your child is showing noticeable changes in mood or behaviour, or discloses that they are having thoughts around suicide or self-harm, it is important to know how you can best support them.

Every child has different support needs, and it is important that as a parent, you are able to recognise the limits of the support you can offer them. If you are unsure, you should always seek professional help.
