What is SEN support in schools?

School life can prove challenging in a number of different ways for neurodiverse children. By accommodating for neurodiversity through making 'reasonable adjustments', the school can help children feel comfortable.

What are reasonable adjustments in schools?

By law schools have to make reasonable adjustments- allowances or changes to the normal school rules- to ensure your child is not disadvantaged.

Reasonable adjustments examples include allowing your child to have a toilet pass or noise-cancelling headphones.

The video below explains reasonable adjustments fully.

What do we mean by reasonable adjustments?

Parents of neurodiverse children can work closely with schools to help their child learn and thrive. Reasonable adjustments make school more accessible and supportive for their child. But what does that actually mean, and how do you ask for them?

In this short explainer, we’ll walk you through what reasonable adjustments are, how they can help and simple steps you can take to request support from your child’s school.

How do I use this SEN support in schools guide?

The guide contains a number of suggestions of reasonable adjustments that your child's school can make to help them. Consider which suggestions would help your child and then approach the school SENCO to ask for their help in implementing the adjustments.

Provide the school with as much information as you can about your child's needs and what they struggle with. Our one page profile and sensory profile template can assist you with communicating to the school.
